Background


The Valaichchenai Fisheries Harbor which was destroyed by the Tamil Tiger terrorists LTTE in 1992 , but was recently reopened by Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development at a ceremony of the Valachchenai modernized Fisheries Harbour on July 30.

It is said that Valachchena Fisheries Harbour had not been in use for nearly 20 years due to LTTE threats during war times. Again in 2004 the area was once again badly affected by the ‘Boxing Day’ Tsunami.

Back in 20 February 2009, Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the Valaichchenai Fishery Harbour in the Batticaloa. The Asian Development Bank funded the project, and total cost of reconstruction works was around Rs.330 million.

Rajitha Senaratne, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Rauf Hakeem, Minister of Justice, Shivaneshathrai Chandrakanth, Chief Minister of Eastern Province, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, Deputy Minister of Resettlement, M.L.A.M. Hisbulla, Deputy Minister of Child Affairs and Women's Affairs, Rita O'Sullivan, Residential Director of ADB, Amal Senadhilankara, Chairman Ceylon Fisheries Harbor Corporation also participated at the event .
